Rio’s Belle Époque

In the early 20th century, Rio was the capital of Brazil, and the city center was rebuilt with wide avenues inspired by Paris. The grand buildings around the square date from that time.

The Municipal Theater

The Theatro Municipal opened in 1909 and was inspired by the Paris Opera. With its marble, mosaics and golden interiors, it is one of the most beautiful buildings in Brazil, and it still hosts opera, ballet and concerts.

Around the square

The National Library, one of the largest in Latin America, and the National Museum of Fine Arts also face the square, along with the Pedro Ernesto Palace, home of the city council. The name Cinelândia comes from the movie theaters that opened here in the 1920s and 1930s. Over the years, the square has hosted demonstrations, celebrations and carnival parties.

Visiting with Marcio

A walk around the square is part of the Best of Rio in One Day. Marcio tells the stories behind the façades and how this corner of the city shaped Rio’s history.
